Karate kid brings home a bronze

He faced up to best in the world

Renfrewshi­re has its very own karate kid in the shape of Harry McKay.

The 13-year-old managed to secure a magnificen­t bronze medal at the World Karate Federation’s Youth World Cup in Umag, Croatia.

The talented youngster was part of an eight-strong team competing from Renfrew-based karate club Shitokai Scotland, fought in the under 14 class, taking on all comers from around the globe.

And he didn’t disappoint with a stunning display against his far-flung foes.

McKay managed to get the better of his Bosnian opponent, 1-0, in the first round but was unfortunat­e as he narrowly lost out to a Russian, the eventual winner of the category, 1-0 in the second round.

However, the local youngster managed to regroup for his next two bouts as he then faced South Africa, winning 5- 3, before seeing off a Canadian fighter 2-0.

And to top off a stunning three days of competitio­n for the in the bronze medal match, he beat a very good Slovakian fighter 2-0.

Coach Stephanie Connell was full of praise for thesquad and especially Harry, who was the youngest member of the team.

She said: “We came away from the tournament with a bronze medal, which is great.

“There were 19 countries in this category, so it was fantastic to be on the podium.

“The team equipped themselves very well for the tournament, and are mixing it with the best in the world.

“It’s fantastic to see Scottish athletes holding their own at such a prestigiou­s event.

“Harry really brought his best to the tournament. He stayed calm, kept a clear head and capitalise­d on his chances in the matches.

“We are incredibly proud of his achievemen­t.”
