Morgan’s all about the Saints

Winger’s head won’t be turned

- Craig Ritchie

He may be attracting attention from south the border, but St Mirren talent Lewis Morgan insists his sights are solely on Saints.

The Paisley club rejected two bids from English Championship side Burton Albion earlier this summer, with the club rebuffing approaches from Nigel Clough’s Brewers.

The winger’s contract is up at the end of the forthcoming season, but St Mirren appear to be in no mood to cash in on the Scotland under-21 international. Instead, they are choosing to focus their attentions on keeping him at the club for the final year of his deal.

And Morgan admits he has no problem with hanging about for another season following a successful campaign on the flanks last time around.

Morgan said: “I love working with the gaffer and, obviously, when there is interest in you, then you just have to make sure that it doesn’t turn your head.

“I’ve got a job to do here while I’m under contract.

“Until the club want me to go, then I’m here to play. I will always give 100 per cent.

“I’ll leave all the speculation to everyone else — I don’t take too much to do with it.

“Until anything is concrete, it is pointless paying much attention to it.

“It is a confidence builder knowing that I am attracting a bit of interest from teams in that league because it is obviously a massive league.

“But, at the moment, I have a job to do here and, with the squad we have assembled, it is going to be an exciting season.”

Despite having hit double figures last year, Morgan insists he still has plenty to improve on to make himself a better player.

Speculation about his future is sure to draw his attention to his performances once the competitive campaign kicks off, and it is something he insists he is happy to deal with.

Morgan added: “I still need to work on every area of my game as I don’t think you can ever rest on what you are good at.

“I can always improve and I am hoping to score double the amount that I did last season, which was 10.”

A move down south in the future would see Morgan follow in the footsteps of former Saints teammate and friend Stevie Mallan.

The midfielder penned a deal with English Championship side Barnsley during the summer, with Morgan admitting it is a blow to the side.

“Stevie is going to be a big loss,” he said, “But I’m delighted for him as a friend that he has got his move.

“However, as a teammate, I must admit I wish he had stayed.”
