Ex-Saint on Derby hopes

- Craig Ritchie

Kyle McAllister insists he has to make up for lost time after injury plagued his start to life at Derby County following his switch from St Mirren.

The young midfielder was a revelation for the Buddies in the first half of last season, before performances caught the eye of the English Championship side.

He eventually penned a deal at Pride Park in January, however, he has yet to feature for Gary Rowett’s side following a raft of injuries.

But with pre-season now under way, McAllister has joined up with the under-23s in a bid to get fit before the season starts.

McAllister said: “It has been a while to be honest.

“I did a bit of running over the off season but, compared to that, the training has been hard.

“I need to get fit for the season so that is probably what is best for me.

“There is a sense now of making up for lost time.

“I feel like I have done nothing here.

“When you join a club you are expecting to come in and start straight away.

“I came here injured so I have been thinking that I need to get back.

“I’ve been trying my hardest to get fit so I have been looking forward to pre- season getting started just to feel fit again.

“I have never ever felt 100 per cent and this is the first time I have had no aches and pains and it is amazing, so I don’t mind.”

He added: “I’ve come here, moving away from home, so you just want to come into it.

“When you are injured you have too much time and you just struggle a bit so now that I’m back in training, it makes it so much easier.”
