Probe continues into huge blaze at Augean
Investigations are continuing into the cause of a major fire that ripped through a waste company’s site at an industrial estate.
A huge cloud of smoke could be seen from miles around as the fire took hold at Augean Plc, in Clark Street, on Saturday evening.
Firefighters using nine appliances worked all night to tackle the blaze at the estate just off Greenock Road and close to Glasgow Airport.
Clark Street was closed off to traffic as water and foam were used to dampen down the flames.
A spokesman for Augean said:“The fire was brought quickly under control by the attending fire crews.
“Augean would like to thank the firemen for their swift and efficient reaction to the incident and apologise to neighbouring businesses and residents for any inconvenience caused.
“Limited damage was caused and the site has reopened today for business.
“An investigation into the cause of the fire has been initiated by the Fire and Rescue Service as well as Augean. ”
The estate is home to a number of businesses, including Clark Contacts.
A spokesman for that firm said:“The fire started on the site adjacent to ours and, at its most intense, did spread across the site boundary to threaten an office and canteen building attached to our manufactured joinery workshop.”
