Defender gets it in the neck

Debut strike ends in a collision with goalpost

- Craig Ritchie

Gregor Buchanan insists St Mirren target being head and shoulders above the rest... but jokes his head nearly came clean off his shoulders as he notched his first goal at the weekend.

The defender rose highest in the box to head home his side’s fourth goal away to Stranraer on Saturday but he couldn’t stop himself colliding head first with the woodwork on the follow through.

Buchanan required treatment from the physio following the goal, but recovered to see out the entirety of the 90 minutes to cap an impressive debut at the heart of the Saints defence.

But instead of being dazed and confused, the 27-year-old is firmly focused as the game’s continue to come thick and fast, starting tonight at home to Livingston.

Buchanan laughed: “I didn’t know much about the goal – but I think I was nearly decapitated.

“I was actually at Dumbarton with the boy Tom Lang who was marking me and he went one side of the post while I managed to go straight towards it.

“I just couldn’t stop myself and crashed my neck off of the post.

“By the cheers in the background, I knew that the header had gone in but there was no time for celebrations.

“But looking ahead, we want to carry this on into Tuesday night, the League Cup section sees all the teams wanting to do well at the start of the season.

“We want to go and get through the group stages, three points on the board sees us start well.

“That was the sort of performance that we were looking for. We have been working hard to get to this point.”

Buchanan wasn’t the only one starting the season with a debut goal, with Gavin Reilly and Ross Stewart also on target in their first outing.

The two forwards will be expected to be amongst the goals more often that not this season, but Buchanan admits he would like to help the cause more despite playing in defence.

He added: “Personally it was good to get on the scoresheet as well because it is something that I probably need to add to my game a little bit.

“I scored a lot more goals at the start of my career so I want to go back to that week in, week out, when I get the opportunity.”
