Construction firm says bid team are brilliant

Staff are ‘credit to Paisley’

- Kenneth Speirs

A construction firm that was appointed an ambassador for the Paisley UK City of Culture 2021 bid had said‘Don’t thank us – thank you.”

CGC, which is based in Macdowall Street, praised the “brilliant” team behind the bid that has just seen Paisley put on a shortlist of five for the coveted title.

The bid team said a big thank- you to business and Paisley people for supporting the drive and their “incredible contribution”.

But CGC turned the tables and instead heaped praise on the bid team itself, saying the staff were “a credit to Paisley for getting us this far”.

Leo Reilly, managing director of CGC based in McDowell Street, personally ordered the Paisley 2021 logo to be shown on the firm’s fleet of vans to help spread the word.

And in February, CGC was named an ambassador for the Bid after it hosted a St Valentine’s Day visit by the Bid’s “Culture Bus”:

Mr Reilly said: “This is great news. The men and women in the Bid team are a credit to Paisley and Renfrewshire.

“They have shown great professional skill in getting us this far with an exciting and vibrant bid which sets out a very clear vision of the benefits this kind of achievement can bring.

“The bid team were very generous in thanking the public and companies who have really got behind it.

“In fact without the exceptionally- talented team we wouldn’t have got this far.

“The bid bandwagon has been rolling for some time now. All we need now is for us to get across the finishing line, and CGC like so many local businesses are right behind them.”

Pa i s l e y has now joined Coventry, Stoke, Sunderland and Swansea to battle it out for the title after the UK Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport confirmed the 11 places bidding for the title had been whittled down to just five.

Paisley is bidding for the title as part of a wider push to use the town’s unique heritage and history as the home of the globallyrecognised Paisley Pattern to transform its future.

It is estimated Paisley’s 2021 year could bring a £ 172million economic boost and create the equivalent of 4,700 jobs over a ten-year period.

The announcement of the winner of the UK City of Culture 2021 title will be made in December.
