MP heads up bid to end violence against women
Men and boys must step up to help end violence against women, an MP has demanded.
Gavin Newlands has been chosen to help lead the white ribbon campaign against gender-based abuse.
The SNP politician has called for families to play their part by teaching sons the right way to behave.
Gavin led the drive at Westminster before May’s snap General Election and will retake the post.
He said:“I am passionate about ending the violence that far too many women and girls still face and will continue to work as hard as I can to achieve that goal.
“We must stress the positive role that men and boys can play in helping to end gender-based violence.
“I look forward to working with colleagues from across all the political parties to strengthen the UK Government’s upcoming Domestic Abuse Bill.”
The Paisley and Renfrewshire North member says the work of the all-party parliamentary group can lead to the government ratifying the Istanbul Convention.
It defines and criminalises the various forms of aggression against women, as well as domestic violence.
Countries signing up commit to providing services staffed by trained professionals to help victims through their plight, run awarenessraising campaigns and launch treatment programmes for offenders.
