Veterans’charity centenary show

- Kenneth Speirs

03.08.2017 Archives from the Erskine armed forces charity are to feature in a major art exhibition.

The show will include film footage and artefacts from throughout its 100-year history.

People will be able to feel the weight of a replica artificial limb and learn about the workshops that supported the rehabilitation of patients from 1917.

There will also be a chance to explore the past through veterans’ drawings, poetry and notes, including the ‘Erskine Bugle’ newsletter, written by patients at the hospital.

And you can visit a cinema and watch a fascinating documentary which celebrates Erskine’s history.

The show will include highlydesirable works by top artists, such as internationally renowned Peter Howson and Paisley’s own Joe Hargan, as well as many other handpicked artists with a military background.

The annual exhibition – dubbed Art for Erskine – will take place at the Lighthouse, in Glasgow, and there will also be a wide range of contemporary art for sale.

Sara Bannerman, Erskine head of external relations, said: “Art for Erskine is now in its fifth year and celebrates Erskine’s history with a special centenary exhibition.

“Art for Erskine attracts a wide range of people with varied interests and is always a busy event. We are extremely grateful to The Studio: Fine Art Company and The Lighthouse for their support.”

Councillor Eva Bolander, Lord Provost of Glasgow, an ex- officio president of Erskine Hospital, said: “This is a wonderful charity helping to support and care for our veterans for 100 years.

“Let’s hope lots of people, Glaswegians and visitors alike, will go along to see the Art for Erskine exhibition at The Lighthouse, in the heart of Glasgow’s city centre.

“With a large selection of artwork on sale, it will also be a fantastic opportunity to own a piece of contemporary art and help raise money for a very deserving charity. I wish it every success.”

Art for Erskine Exhibition and Sale, in partnership with The Studio Fine Art Company, is open from 10.30am until 5pm Monday to Saturday and from noon to 5pm on Sunday. Admission is free.
