Tahir shines despite Scotland crashing out of cup

-

Ferguslie Cricket Club’s Haroon Tahir was in fine form, despite Scotland’s Under-19 World Cup campaign ending in disappointment.

The Scots knew heading into the clash with Ireland at Grainville, Jersey, that only a convincing win would book their spot in New Zealand for the tournament proper.

The Scots took to the field first and were delighted to collect the wickets of four of Ireland’s top-order batters as Oliver Brown and Ihtisham Malik started in fine form with the new ball.

The wickets continued to tumble, and Ireland found themselves toiling on 27/5, with the Scots delighted with their efforts.

Runs were far from easy to come by, but captain Harry Tector produced an innings that would give his side hope as his team-mates tumbled at the other end.

Angus Beattie claimed two wickets, while Haroon Tahir bowled 10 overs and only conceded 21 runs.

However, Tector’s resilient 55 helped Ireland to 108.

Scotland were now in to bat, but opening pair Owais Shah and Calum Garden had both been dismissed before the end of the eighth over.

Hinton battled with 21 as he and Finlay McCreath tried to get their side back on track.

Unfortunately for the Scots, both departed, along with captain Dickinson, and Ireland knew they had a real chance.

Rory Johnston struck 30 as he and Beattie turned the match into the favour of Scots, who were now on 92/5, requiring 16 runs for victory.

But there proved to be another twist as four wickets tumbled during the 90s.

And it wasn’t to be for the battling Scots as Malik looked to finish it off, but his attempt failed and Tahir and Scotland crashed out.
