Injury-stricken midfielder’s contract is terminated

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren midfielder Rocco Quinn has been released from the club by mutual consent.

The 30- year- old becomes the seventh player to depart the club over the close season, following the likes of Stevie Mallan and Kyle Hutton in leaving the Paisley side.

Quinn suffered a long-term leg injury at the beginning of last season after being stretchered off in the first game of the Betfred Cup campaign away to Livingston.

He returned against Albion Rovers in the Irn-Bru Cup in September and looked to have put his injury woes behind him following the arrival of Jack Ross.

A run of eight games between December and January saw Quinn back to his best in the heart of midfield, only for injury to strike again against Dunfermline on January 21.

He would go on to make a further four appearances for the Paisley side.

Quinn’s release comes despite having featured in pre-season.

He also came on as a secondhalf substitute in the first League Cup game of this season away to Stranraer, in a tie, during which he was also booked.

However, the arrival of Stephen McGinn and Ian McShane in recent months has spelled an end to Quinn’s first team hopes at the club, while the emergence of Kyle Magennis over the last season would also threaten Quinn’s spot in the starting XI.

The former St Johnstone and Ross County man scored one goal in his 32 appearances for the Paisley side, having joined from County back in January 2016 under former Buddies boss Alex Rae, penning a deal in the same transfer window as Gary Irvine, David Clarkson and Alex Cooper.

A club statement read: “St Mirren Football Club can confirm that we have reached a mutual agreement to terminate the contract of Rocco Quinn.

“The midfielder joined the Buddies in January 2016 after leaving Ladbrokes Premiership side Ross County.

“He went on to make 32 appearances for the Saints — scoring one goal in a 2-2 draw with Hibernian in April 2016.

“The club would like to wish Rocco all the best for his future career.”
