Ross secures future at club

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren boss Jack Ross insists he is full of ambition after committing his future to the Paisley side until 2020.

Ross and assistant manager James Fowler yesterday penned new deals with the Saints, extending their current contracts by a further year.

The duo had been subject of interest from Dundee earlier this summer, but rebuffed any approach from the Premiership side in favour of extending their stay with St Mirren.

Ross and Fowler oversaw a miraculous escape from the clutches of the drop last season, beating the relegation play-offs with a draw away to champions Hibernian on the final day of the season.

And, with his thoughts now firmly on Saints and their Championship opener at home to Falkirk this afternoon, Ross is now keen to turn his attentions further up the league as the Buddies target promotion.

He told Express Sport : “I want to get the club back to the Premiership — it’s as simple as that.

“I feel as though I have only just started the job here.

“The first aim was to retain our Championship status last year and now it is time to build a squad capable of challenging and hopefully that is this season.

“There is a commitment at this club to continue that progression, from myself and the board.

“The club was in a low place when I first came in and to turn that around doesn’t just happen in the space of six or so months. That is ongoing and there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes and that will continue.

“I’ve said before how committed I am to the club and I think I showed that over the summer, but now is time to look to future and set out to achieve what we have targeted.”

Talks over a new contract have been rumbling on since the rumoured interest from Dundee back in May, but Ross insists that there was never any doubt he was going to pen the deal.

Ross, chairman Gordon Scott and the rest of the board had all been keen to get the deal over the line.

Ross added: “Myself and the chairman have had discussions for a couple of months now and it is not through any other circumstances than we have a lot of other things to deal with.

“And the board deserve credit because they were very pro-active to get myself to commit further to the club.

“I was keen to do that because I am ambitious here.

“They were keen to send out a positive message, and it is like anything in football — you want to produce positive results both on and off of the park.”
