Habbies shine in the Emerald Isle

Top trio head back to Kilbarchan with medals and new records

- Craig Ritchie

There was again some recordbreaking performances as Kilbarchan AAC prospects impressed at the Celtic Games.

Two Scotland teams were in Dublin for the annual youth international match at under-18 and under-16 level over the weekend, with a host of Habbies on show.

Kilbarchan’s Kirsty Costello, David McNair and Andrew McFarlane were all in action.

And while this year there were no trophies coming back across the water from Ireland, there were a number of good performances from the Scottish hopefuls.

The highlight of the trip was a new Scottish under-15 record in the hammer competition from Costello, as she threw a 57.83m.

In the process, she bettered her previous under-15 record of 54.90, and her pending record of 55.92, in throwing the second best all-time by a Great British under-15 — just 18cm less than the GB best.

And there was also a terrific run from fellow Habbie David McNair in the under-16 800m, taking silver with a time of 1:58.85.

Ireland won the overall team title at the Celtic Games with a number of excellent performances in Morton Stadium.

The Emerald Isle tallied 188 points overall to top Scotland and Wales on the podium.

There was a host of star performers. In the girls’ ranks, some of the winners were Laura Nicholson with 5:00.98 in the 1,500m steeplechase, Miriam Daly clocking 56.36 in the 400m, and Jade Williams in the hammer with 61.09m, pipping Costello to the win.
