Gaffer’s derby plea

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren boss Jack Ross admits Saints have a lot to live up to when they return to Cappielow this afternoon.

The Paisley side return to Greenock for the first time since their 4-1 triumph over rivals Morton at the end of last season, looking to build upon their opening day victory over Falkirk last weekend.

Ross warns that he doesn’t expect an easy game, having fallen to defeat to Jim Duffy’s side on the previous occasion in Inverclyde in embarrassing fashion.

But he reckons his side is in the best possible shape ahead of the tie as he enters the match with no fear.

He said: “It is always a good game to have. If you look at the division this year, there are very few fixtures that you would think are comfortable games.

“We knew that we had a very tough start.

“Falkirk was always going to be a hard one, and to follow that up with a clash with your derby rivals is challenging – but equally as exciting for the players.

“We know we will take a big support to Greenock and it is Morton’s first home game of the season, so for the players it is exciting too.

“We set a high standard in the derby last time, and we just want to continue the momentum we have.” Ross bolstered his squad at the end of the week with the arrival of former Falkirk striker Darryl Duffy. And the Saints boss admits that could be his business done for the summer. He added: “I think squad-wise we are good. “We are strong and we have depth in it. It is a tough division – having the squad is one thing, but going to produce results week-in week-out is another thing altogether. “Because the squad is getting bigger now then we may loan a couple of players out, but we still have half of the month to go to see how things develop.”
