Tidy children say litter is in the bag

Youngsters clean up street where they live

- Colette Crampsey

Youngsters have been doing their bit to improve their local area.

Brother and sister Reiss, seven, and Rachael Thomson, nine, were joined by their cousin Olivia Churcher, 10 in cleaning up the street where they live.

Armed with bin bags and litter pickers, the kids dedicated a day of their summer break to improving unsightly Redhurst Way, Paisley, a path which is close to each of their houses. The kids were tired of seeing trash, litter and discarded dog waste as they walked through the path each day to and from school, so took it into their own hands to tidy up.

Grandmother Kay Thomson said the children were eager to make a difference to their area.

She told: “The path can be disgusting sometimes.

“There’s dog waste, dog waste bags, assorted cans, cigarette packets, broken glass and various other bits and pieces lying around that the children have to try and avoid. This path is used to get to their school at Langcraigs and the kids play around there too.

“They would always mention to me about how terrible the litter was and I said, ‘Well you could always clean up’, so they decided to do their bit.”

The youngsters pulled on their rubber gloves and wellies and spent a day last week picking up litter.

“They even had their watering cans out too,” Kay added.

“They enjoyed doing it, they were very animated throughout and wanted to keep going and do the next path down the street.”

Kay said she was delighted that the children were so eager to get outdoors and help to improve the environment.

She explained: “It was something different for them to do and got them away from their indoor video games, but it also taught them the importance of taking pride in their area.

“Their pockets are always full with crisp packets and such so they know not to drop litter and definitely take pride in being tidy.”
