Road rage thug is jailed after attacking bikers

Danger driving incident shocks sheriff

17.08.2017 A road rage thug who hounded two motorcycli­sts, knocking one off his bike and threatenin­g another with a chain, has been caged for 30 months.

Barry Gilfedder, 36, even drove over the motorbike of an injured man and left the scene of the accident during a terrifying attack.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard he began his violent attack on the A82 and then he crossed over the Erskine Bridge into Erskine and Houston in August 16, 2016, in pursuit of his quarry.

And a sheriff branded the crimes as “one of the worst cases of dangerous driving I have ever come across during my time on the bench.”

The accused of Rachel Place, Kilmacolm, appeared for sentencing after he was convicted at a trial of dangerous driving, driving at speed, and repeatedly swerving towards motorcycli­st Duncan Campbell, c/o police, forcing him to take evasive action.

He was also found guilty of driving at biker William Ross. c/ o police, causing him to fall from his machine to the danger of his life, and then driving over his victim’s bike in his car.

He also brandished a metal chain at Mr Campbell, kicked his bike, causing it to fall over and made vile threats of violence.

The road rage incidents also took place when Gilfedder had been freed on bail from Paisley Sheriff.

Defence agent James Arrol said: “He was found guilty in respect of these charges. His mother committed suicide two and a half years ago and he has struggled to come to terms with that loss.

“He accepts these are serious offences and thankfully no one was seriously injured.

“He had been travelling back from where his mother’s ashes were scattered when these offences happened.”

Sheriff James Spy jailed Gilfedder for 30 months telling after describing the events as “one of the worst cases of dangerous driving I have ever come across during my time on the bench.

“You fail to accept your guilt even after you were convicted at trial. In my view a custodial sentence is inevitable.”
