Ferguslie are still in with a chance of clinching the title
Carruthers is defiant after Dumfries win
Ferguslie Cricket Club’s league title pursuit of Prestwick continued with a low-scoring win over Dumfries at the weekend.
The Paisley side travelled to Nunholm knowing a win would keep up the pressure on their rivals at the top of the WDCU.
In what was a tense affair, Ferguslie managed to secure a slender win over the team placed seventh in the league.
The pitch was playing into the bowlers’ hands and Ferguslie were only able to post a meagre run tally of 65. Michael English was the top scorer on the day, but even he was bowled out for just 27.
It was then over to the Ferguslie’s bowlers to pull an unlikely win out of the hat – and they did just that.
In a fantastic display of accuracy and persistence, Ferguslie held the home team to just 55 runs.
Young Australian Josh Forsyth was the top performer for Dumfries, driving home 30 runs.
Riyaad Henry put in a man- of- thematch performance, taking four wickets for just 13 runs in 10 overs – a superb spell of bowling that will long be remembered by the Ferguslie faithfiul.
Ferguslie captain Jamey Carruthers and Greg Cameron both took two wickets each while Michael English completed two run-outs.
Carruthers was delighted with the win after a slow batting start left them with it all to do.
He said: “Dumfries bowled well early on and that, combined with some poor batting, left us facing defeat at half-time.
“But when we reduced Dumfries to 11- 4 with two early wickets for myself and Riyaad I think we started to believe we could win.
“Riyaad’s 10 overs were exceptional and Greg only went for nine runs from his six overs.
“Michael’s two run-outs at the end were superb and, looking at it now, his 27 was massive.”
Carruthers says the performance leaves them ideally placed to mount a challenge at the top of the table, adding: “It’s a huge result to keep us in the hunt, but we know Prestwick need to lose.”
