Lout blasted by sheriff for wearing Rangers top in dock

- Ron Moore

A sheriff tore a strip off a yob who turned up in court wearing a Rangers top.

Mark Michie, 22, was given a dressing down by Sheriff David Pender when he ambled into the dock sporting his Old Firm colours.

The lawman got shirty with Michie, who also showed up late for the hearing at Paisley Sheriff Court this week.

He said: “I don’t think what you are wearing is appropriate clothing for court. You are not going to Ibrox, you are attending court.

“You should have come to court wearing something more appropriate and not wearing a football jersey.”

The lout, of Thrushcraig Crescent, in the town’s Hunterhill area, was appearing to be sentenced for a drug dealing charge, a public disorder offence and breaches of bail.

He was being assessed for a restriction of liberty order, which would see him fitted with an electronic tag and made subject of a curfew.

Defence agent Peter Galletly said: “His mother’s home would not be suitable accommodation for such an order, however, his aunt’s home is big enough and she would welcome this as a member of his family.

“He is attempting to get his own tenancy from the council, and has put his name down for temporary accommodation, as well as register for Abercorn Street.

“However, this wouldn’t be permitted by the local authority which will not carry out alterations of this type in temporary, pre-let housing.”

The lawyer asked that matters be adjourned for a fortnight so that the social work department could inspect Michie’s aunt’s home as suitable for the installation of the tag equipment.

He added that his client was a young man who enjoyed the support of his family.

Sheriff David Pender said: “I will adjourn matters for good behaviour for two weeks while an investigation, as articulated by your lawyer, is carried out.

“This case will call before me in two weeks. The situation is you are suitable for supervision, you are not suitable for a community payback order.

“Any further offending and you will go to jail.”

Michie will learn of his fate when he reappears for sentencing on August 30.
