Fire rages through old primary school
An old school building has been gutted by fire.
Fire fighters fought the blaze at the former St Fergus Primary, in Paisley’s Blackstoun Road, early on Saturday morning.
Flames rapidly took hold at the back of the building, which dates from the 1950s, and which was only recently decommissioned following the opening of a modern new school next door.
Powerful water jets were used to put out the fire, which started shortly after midnight.
Scottish Fire & Rescue say the incident was scaled down shortly before 4.45am on Saturday, although crews remained at the scene carrying out dampening down operations in a bid to make the area safe.
A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Around 0045 hours on Saturday, police were called regarding a fire at the old St Fergus Primary School in Blackstoun Road, Paisley.
“Officers attended and road closures were put in place. Officers are working with Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire.”
The old school was replaced by a new building in the spring of this year
Renfrewshire Council, which owns the old building, was yesterday unable to put a cost on the fire damage.
A spokesman said: “We will be working with the police and fire service to assess the damage to the building.”
