Seniors showdown at Renfrew Bowling Club
Renfrew Bowling Club played host to the Paisley Veterans Bowling Association Championship as players battled it out in the pouring rain to be crowned Champion of Champions.
The prestigious tournament brings together the best senior players from across the region who compete in the singles, doubles, triples and fours competitions.
The PVBA Championship finals were held last week, with a high standard of play shown by all involved despite some treacherous weather conditions.
The singles winner was John Gordon, who was delighted to receive his trophy from president of the PVBA, Alex Watson.
Louis Thompson and Eddie Scollon, from Blacklandmill Bowling Club, secured the pairs title after a battling and skilful display.
The team from Charleston Bowling Club, made up of James Allison, Alan Peacock and Thomas McGrath, were presented with their triples trophy by Alex Watson on the day too.
And the fours winners were Ronnie Colquhoun, Hugh McCabe, John Ferguson and Tom Geddes from Meikleriggs Bowling Club.
Honorary secretary of the Paisley Veterans Bowling Association, Gillies Wylie, was delighted with how the tournament went but said the rain made for tricky conditions for players.
He said: “I’m very pleased with the way things went on the day apart from the really heavy rain.
“It made it quite difficult to play, especially for some of the older players.
“You have to be over 60 to play in this tournament and we have players aged right up to 80-odd, so the rain made it a little bit dangerous for them at times.
“It was quite difficult for them at times physically.
“But we kept going and we got through all the matches which was good.”
The Championship finals brings together all the winners from competitions within 16 clubs to compete against each other.
“We call it the champion of champions because the players and teams have each won their own club competition, and this is a way of finding out the best in the whole area,” added Gillies.
“I’d like to thank the umpires on the day Gerry Mulholland and Jim Mess who gave up their time to help out.
“I’d also like to thank Renfrew Bowling Club for hosting the tournament this season.”
A collection was also held on the day for a local charity with the final total yet to be counted.
