DOUBLE DELIGHT Goal hero Gavin is all smiles

- Craig Ritchie

Gavin Reilly has that loving feeling back – and he insists it’s all down to the Saints.

The St Mirren striker fired another two goals at the weekend to help his side on their way to a well-earned 3-1 win over Livingston.

It is a long way from the frustrated forward who was often a substitute for Dunfermline while on loan at The Pars last season. And Reilly admits his move to St Mirren this summer has reignited his passion for the game following a goalscoring start to life in the black and white stripes.

Reilly said: “It has been a good run of form. That’s three goals in three in the league and I’ve got a couple in the cup as well so from a personal point of view it has been great.

“I just want to get back to playing football. If the goals come then great, but I just want that feeling of waking up on a Saturday knowing I am going to be playing again.

“It was great for the boys to get the victory, that was the main thing. It was even better considering we were down to 10 men, we had to dig deep and that’s what we did.”

The feeling among the support appears to be mutual towards the striker, with Reilly being the toast of the fans following his winning double at the weekend.

And with the points in the bag Reilly hopes he sent the fans up the road happy.

He added: “We have a great support at home games, but Saturday showed the great travelling support too.

“It was great to celebrate those goals at that end of the park and hopefully they are delighted to go up the road with three points as well.”

The result puts the recent 4- 1 derby defeat at the hands of Morton swiftly to the back of the fans’ minds.

But Reilly revealed that Gary Irvine’s red card on Saturday brought the memories of Jack Baird’s in Greenock just a week prior flooding back – though he hopes the win proves that they handled the situation better.

Reilly said: “There was a sense of deja vu. We gave ourselves a lot to do in the derby last week and it was a tough ask. We got ourselves ahead this weekend but they got back in the game.

“Having then gone down to 10 men, you are thinking it is going to be one of those games again – but we came in and regrouped.

“It just shows the character that we have in the dressing room. To come here at the best of times and win is hard enough, so to do it with 10 men was fantastic.”
