Jail for addict who ran amok with golf club Thug went berserk after guzzling 30 Valium tablets

- Express Reporter

A drug addict who swallowed 30 Valium tablets before going berserk in Paisley High Street with a golf club has been jailed.

Brian McMaster took the handful of pills on top of prescribed methadone and lost the plot on July 21.

When he appeared for sentence at Paisley Sheriff Court, Sheriff David Pender was told that scared members of the public alerted cops after the 42-year-old brute started swinging the club over his head.

He was heard shouting at passers-by: “I’ll knock your head off – come on then.”

Depute fiscal Frank Clarke said that when police arrived and tried to calm him down, he became abusive to them and told one of the officers: “I’ll knock those glasses off your face.”

When they arrested him, he shouted: “My da’ was stabbed – I’m going to find them and take care of it.”

It was clear that he was heavily under the influence of drugs.

In court, McMaster, of Arthur Street, Paisley, admitted having unlawful possession of a golf club as an offensive weapon while behaving in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause fear and alarm to others by shouting, swearing and uttering threats of violence.

Defence agent Terry Gallanagh said it was totally out of character for his client to act in this way as he had no history of violence.

He was out of control after swallowing 30 street Valium tablets on top of methadone as he got wasted to escape from reality.

“He accepts that he may now be escaping to another place as a result of conducting himself in this way,” he added.

McMaster, he said, wished to apologise and say he was “very sorry.”

After studying the accused’s record, Sheriff Pender told him that due to the serious nature of the offences, imprisonment was inevitable and jailed him for a total of six months.
