Saints ace delighted to make Scottish Cup draw

Former St Mirren basketball ace Sarah Thomson was on hand to draw her former team out of the Scottish Cup hat.

Scotland internatio­nal Thomson was invited to make this year’s Scottish Cup draw, with the St Mirren sides all in the mix for yet another shot at glory.

Thomson, herself a Scottish Cup winner with the Paisley side, revealed she was delighted to have been given the opportunit­y to make the draw.

She said:“I was excited about being asked to draw the teams for this year’s Scottish Cup. Having played in the competitio­n myself, I know how great a contest it is for all of the clubs involved.

“I would like to wish every team in this year’s draw the best of luck for the upcoming season.”

Thomson brought some lady-luck to the draw for her former side as she handed them a home draw against City of Edinburgh. The first round draw saw only three ties confirmed, with five sides receiving a bye to the competitio­n’s next round.

Full women’s draw: Tayside Musketeers v Sony Centre Fury, St Mirren v City of Edinburgh, Glasgow Fever v St Andrew’s. Byes: West Lothian Wolves, Glasgow University, Edinburgh University, Lady Rocks, Polonia Phoenix.

In the men’s draw, St Mirren were handed a tricky clash away from The Lagoon. Glasgow University will provide the Buddies with a tough task in order to reach the second round.

All the teams in the draw will feature in the first round, with no byes handed out.

Full men’s draw: Dunfermlin­e Reign v Sony Centre Fury, Glasgow University v St Mirren, Ayrshire Tornadoes v City of Edinburgh, Boroughmui­r Blaze v Heriot Watt University, Highland Bears v Stirling Knights, Glasgow Storm v Winner of Preliminar­y Rounds, Portlethan Panthers v Pleasance Basketball, Edinburgh University v East Aberdeen Warriors.

St Mirren’s youth sides also learned of their Scottish Cup opponents, with the U18 women facing a home clash with Ayr Storm. The U18 men have also been drawn at home, as they prepare to take on Highland Bears.

Meanwhile, the U16 women will take on West Lothian Wolves at home, while the U16 men have been handed an identical clash with Wolves’male counterpar­ts.
