Ex-Saints boss Coughlin is on the move again

Departure follows Wee Rangers 5-1 defeat

- Craig Ritchie

Former St Mirren manager John Coughlin has parted company with League Two side Berwick Rangers.

Coughlin departs in the wake of a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Annan Athletic last Saturday, a result which leaves the Wee Rangers sitting second bottom of the table with three points from the side’s opening three games.

The ex-Saints, East Stirlingshire and Stenhousemuir boss was in charge at Shielfield for the second time, having replaced Colin Cameron in the hotseat in November 2015. He had previously been gaffer between 2005 and 2007.

Berwick had finished eighth in the table last season.

A Berwick Rangers spokesman said: “In view of recent results, the board has today met with John Coughlin to discuss his future with the club.

“Following this meeting, it has been decided to terminate John’s contract by mutual consent.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank John and wish him well for the future.

“The board will work with existing coaching staff to prepare for our next game on Saturday and we ask our fans for their continued support during this time.”

Coughlin is regarded as playing a big role in St Mirren’s Millennium Champions success of 1999/2000.

Serving as Tom Hendrie’s assistant manager, the side would go on to famously storm to the First Division title, aided by the freescoring ranks of Barry Lavety, Mark Yardley, Steven McGarry and Junior Mendes.

Coughlin would then go on to replace Hendrie in the hotseat, following his departure from the club in 2002, originally as caretaker before landing the role on a permanent basis.

His first game in temporary charge of the side proved to be another memorable occasion as Saints battled back from two goals down to dump Renfrewshire rivals Greenock Morton out of the CIS Insurance Cup after extra time.

First- half strikes from Scott Bannerman and David Hopkin looked to have put a then Third Division Morton on route to the next round. But Coughlin’s side managed to turn it around, thanks to goals from Martin Cameron and Simon Lappin and a fantastic late effort from Yardley – despite Brian McGinty’s red card.
