Nine-man ’Frew go through in League Cup

- Junior football

Renfrew boss Colin Clark insists he couldn’t be prouder of his side after nine-man ‘Frew booked their spot in the Sectional League Cup semi-finals.

A penalty- kick victory over Gartcairn was enough to book their place in the final despite finding themselves 2-1 down following red cards for Connor McGuiness and Gregor Wylie.

Dominic Innes’ late equaliser took the tie to spot kicks, adding to Darren Jones’ opener in the first half.

Clark, and co-boss Martin Ferry, now wait to see who their side face in the semi-final, knowing it will be either Pollok or Forth Wanderers away from home.

But the Renfrew manager was keen to focus on his side’s achievement following their hardfought victory.

Clark told Express Sport: “To a man, the boys were fantastic – to come back and take the game to penalties despite having two men sent off is fantastic, they really deserve the credit for digging in.

“We made some changes but from the sending-offs onwards we were actually the better side, and as it went to penalties I was always confident – and rightly so because we ended up scoring all six.

“We rode our luck at times, but so did they in the first half so I’m not going to complain.

“But I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts. We never set out to target this competition, we are a side still in transition, but to a man the boys were brilliant.”
