Thug who threatened dog is on last warning

Brute lost the plot in car park, kicking car and snatching dog

A thug who threatened to batter a woman’s dog after she tried to stop him smashing up a car has been warned to behave or face jail.

Ryan Mowles, 22, had to be pulled away after he grabbed Helen Cannon’s pet and told her: “I don’t hit females, but dogs are a different story”.

She had caught the brute kicking at her neighbour’s car and ran out to confront him.

He was yesterday told he faced jail if he ignored demands to carry out a Community Payback Order.

At Paisley Sheriff Court, Prosecutor Maureen McGovern told how he snatched the animal before threatening to harm it.

She said: “The accused was in the car park and was pacing up and down shouting.

“Helen Cannon heard the commotion and looked outside and saw him standing next to the motor vehicle, kicking it several times.

“She opened the window and told him to stop, he shouted back to ‘f**k off’.

“Other people heard the accused shouting and banging things in the back court.

“The accused’s mum appeared to live in the area and she observed him shouting outside.

“His mum and sister made their way outside, where the accused continually shouted and swore at them, calling them ‘ f***** g a*******s’.

“Helen Cannon left her flat with her dog, when the accused appeared and made his way towards her.

“He acted aggressively towards her, calling her a ‘f*****g fat cow’.

“She managed to remain calm and told him to leave her alone.

“Her dog began to shake and hid behind her legs.

“He grabbed the lead and pulled her dog away from her.”

Police received five anonymous emergency calls during the disturbance as neighbours watched in horror.

Mowles only let go of the dog after his mother and sister ran to help and hauled it away.

The yob caused £300 of damage to the black Renault Megane hatchback during the ordeal on May 28, in Craighead Way, Barrhead.

He had previously pleaded guilty to smashing up a television cabinet during a separate disturbance in Kintyre Avenue, Linwood, on October 6.

Mowles has been warned he faces prison if he does not keep up with the order imposed as an alternative to custody.

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew told him he was “very fortunate” to have avoided a stretch behind bars.

He said: “You cannot behave like this. You must perform the order and keep out of trouble.

“If you don’t, custody will be imposed.”

Mowles, of nearby Waulkmill Avenue, will return to court for a further review in the autumn.
