Race aces bring back silverware for Habbies

Medal haul for hardworking Kilbarchan runners across the UK

- Craig Ritchie

It’s been a busy few days for Kilbarchan athletes as they continue to bring back medals from across the UK.

Jemma Reekie turned her attention to the shorter distance to race over 800m in the Manchester International.

In what was only her second outdoor 800m of the season, she had some serious senior competition, including defending champion Mhairi Hendry from Victoria Park, Glasgow.

But she never let her rivals intimidate her as she stormed to victory, driving ahead of the pack on the final bend to pass Hendry on the home straight.

Her time of 2:08.39 in a gutsy run was enough to take gold for Reekie and the Habbies.

Club mate Kerry MacAngus followed later in the 1,500m senior women’s race with a fine third place in 4:31.85 to seal the bronze.

And also over 1,500m, Cameron Wright was third place in the under-17 men’s race in a time of 4: 04.66, with Andrew MacAngus following him home for fourth in 4:05.25 and Michael Simson sixth in 4:06.30.

In the senior men’s hammer, Andrew Costello struck silver with a good opening throw of 53.78m, following on from his under- 20 gold the previous weekend at Scotstoun.

Cameron Stark was also on medal form in the hammer, taking bronze at under-17 level with 42.66m – his best on the day.

And three Scottish athletes took top four places at the Frank Duffy 10 Mile Road Race in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

Kilbarchan’s Gemma Rankin just lost out in a sprint finish in the women’s race, with Irish marathon champion Laura Graham winning in a time of 58:57 on a hilly course.

Gemma’s Scotland team mate at this year’s Lillebaelt Half Marathon, Jenny Bannerman (Inverness Harriers) was fourth in 60:17, and Inverclyde’s Craig Ruddy was fourth in the men’s contest in 53:03.
