A community hub that brings men together will open its doors this weekend.

Barrhead Men’s Shed is inviting the public to learn more about its work and join the growing “shedders” movement.

This provides a space for older men to meet, pursue hobbies, and socialise, and it is one of more than 100 Men’s Sheds throughout Scotland.

More than 30 men attend the Barrhead shed each week.

It is equipped with woodwork i n g t o o l s, computers, and other equipment, and located at 9 Robertson Street.

Ross McKemmie, a retired electrical engineer and secretary of Barrhead Men’s Shed, said they hoped to showcase their work and attract new members. He said it fulfilled a valuable role in the community.

He said: “It gets people out the house, gives them a place to meet, and helps them stay active. It’s particularly valued by folk who live alone or have lost family members.

“A lot of our members claim they don’t see their doctors as much anymore.”

Projects include making benches, bird tables, and planters plus special commissions.

The group was awarded funding from Age Scotland and The National Lottery Awards for All, INTU Braehead and the Co- Op. East Renfrewshire Council and East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership have provided funds to cover rent and utilities.

Keith Robson, Chief Executive of Age Scotland, said: “I’d encourage everyone to come out, have a look and see what the shed has to offer.”

The event is part of Doors Open Days 2017, which gives the public free access to buildings of interest throughout East Renfrewshire and the rest of Scotland.

The sheds will be open from 10am to 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
