Don’t be a victim of the bogus callers

Cops issue alert over conmen

- Gavin McInally

Police in Renfrewshire have reminded vulnerable residents to be on their guard against bogus callers.

Crooks have targeted OAPs in Paisley and surrounding towns and villages in scams ranging from home repairs to tax cons.

And cops want elderly residents to take steps to ensure they don’t fall victim to callous conmen.

Inspector Tracy Harkins from Paisley police office said: “Doorstep criminals will often identify elderly or vulnerable people in local communities and try to steal from them.

“We are asking everyone to review their doorstep safety advice, to look out for neighbours and to report anything that appears suspicious.

“Often rogue traders who arrive at your door unannounced will attempt to use high pressure tactics to get people to sign up for a service or buy goods.

“This includes traders who claim that your home or garden is in need of urgent repair work, those who charge unreasonable prices, increase the price as the work is undertaken or those who take a deposit and don’t return.”

She added: “Residents should never feel forced into letting someone into their home and should always ask callers to produce valid identification.

“We would remind anyone, and particularly older members of the community – if anyone comes to your door, always ask for identification.

“Always close and lock your door while you contact the company or agency in order to check they are genuine before allowing anyone access to your home.

“Use your door chain to ensure they cannot gain entry until you are satisfied with their identity.”

If you believe doorstep criminals are operating in your area call police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.
