Waterlogged park puts paid to games

-

Ralston’s big community event of the year was washed out by rain.

Organisers of the Community Games reluctantly took the decision to postpone Saturday’s fun gathering until the spring due to waterlogged ground at the sports centre venue in Penilee Road.

Allan Thompson, acting chairman of joint-organisers Ralston Community Centre, said:“The ground was pretty much saturated.

“We were going to have things like a bucking bronco and a trampoline, and there would have been health and safety issues when the ground was still so wet.”

The event was cast into doubt on Thursday after days of heavy rain, and it was then that organisers toured the sports centre grounds to check their suitability before finally taking the decision to call them off at the weekend.

A message possted on the games’ website before the event said “Unfortunately, due to the typical Scottish weather, we have taken the decision to postpone the Ralston Community Games.

“While the forecast for Saturday looks nice, the continuous rain this week (and with rain forecast again for tomorrow) has left the pitches waterlogged and not safe for us to run the event.

“We do not feel the day would be the enjoyable experience we have all been looking forward to. “Apologies to all who were due to attend. “We are very disappointed that the event will not go ahead, but hopefully we can make up for it in the spring.”

It is expected that the event will now be held in April or May.
