BB members take advantage of Doors Open Day

- Kenneth Speirs

The centenary of the Juniors Section of the Boys’ Brigade was celebrated in Paisley by the youngsters carrying out the latest in their 100 challenges.

They have been set to mark the 100 years since younger BB members were given their own roles to play on the Christian organisation.

And as a number of the challenges are to discover more about our local community, the 15th Paisley Boys’ Brigade decided they would take advantage of the recent Doors Open day to help achieve as many as they could fit in to a Saturday morning.

Captain Jan Phillips said: “Setting off from Stow Brae, our first stop was St Matthew’s Church to visit a place of worship different to our own.

“As well as seeing the beautiful interior, the boys were invited to create a little beauty of their own by printing bags and T- shirts to take home.

“Next, came the abbey where we discovered lots of the history while completing their quiz.

“We then climbed all 197 steps to the top of the tower where one of the dads with us shared his knowledge and the boys had a chance to spot local landmarks.

“Back downstairs, we met the Provost – another challenge ticked off – and were invited by the council photographer to pose for photos with her high up in the abbey.

“After brief stops at Paisley 2021 and the arts centre, we headed for Sma’ Shot cottages and spent time there learning more of the history of our town.

“After dropping in at the museum to collect our rewards for completing at least five visits we returned – much later than planned as we’d so many questions to ask about what we were seeing – to waiting parents at our church.

“A great day exploring what’s on our doorstep.”

This Saturday, the Juniors will be part of the Battalion’s Big Birthday celebrations at Renfrew North Church.

It will be an afternoon packed full of activities, including planting a tree, meeting an MSP, donating to Renfrewshire Foodbank and completing lots more challenges.
