Call for urgent action over derelict garage

Disused petrol station is already a target for vandals

- David Campbell

A concerned councillor fears a disused petrol station will continue to be targeted by vandals if action is not taken to clean up the site

Yobs set the Benstons Garage, in Beith Road, Johnstone, ablaze last month and now residents fear it could become the focal point for antisocial behaviour.

NJohn Hood, elected member for Johnstone south and Elderslie, wants to see the site cleared out after being left derelict for several years.

He told the Paisley Daily Express: “This site looks terrible and I’ve had a number of complaints from local residents.

“It is clearly visible to the many people who use the Beith Road as well as being next to Johnstone High School and sports hub so it gives a terrible impression of the area.”

We reported last month how fire bugs set fire to the metal containers and tyres at the site.

The louts sneaked in through the roof and set fire to steel containers, which spread to the building and other material.

Dark plumes of smoke could be seen billowing from the unoccupied premises as firefighters brought the blaze under control.

At the time, police officers moved to reassure residents living nearby that there is no risk to the public as a result of the blaze.

Sergeant Alan Mack said: “Although this is a former filling station, there is no risk with regards to underground tanks or anything like that.

“The petrol station has not been used for many years, so there is no risk of explosion and I would like to reassure the public of that.”

Councillor Hood has now called on the council to investigate whether it has the power to clean up the site or compel the owners to take action to make it safe.

He added: “I have contacted the council to see what powers they have or indeed any other agency has to get this site cleared.

“People will know there was recently a fire here so as well as the look of the area I am concerned about its safety.”

No- one was available for comment at Renfrewshire Council yesterday.
