Braehead make finals after Capitals clash

-

Braehead Clan sealed their spot in the final of the Scottish Elite Cup the previous day with a 4-2 win over Edinburgh Capitals at Murrayfield.

Goaltender Ryan Nie was again at his best in the first period as he rhymed off a string of saves.

And Clan were also looking to force ahead but Pavel Shegalo of the Caps was producing a number of saves.

But Shegalo was unable to hold out forever and Clan fired themselves ahead before the end of the first period. A sweeping move from the right hand side was rounded off by Mike Embach. Jacob Doty would add a second for the Clan before the end of the period as he struck low beyond a stranded Shegalo.

The Capitals came out fighting in the second period and they would close the gap within a minute when Sergei Banashkov dragged back across Nie to make it 2-1.

Then Bari McKenzie helped to set up former Capitals coach, Richard Hartmann, who scored against his former club in a well worked move to signal Clan’s intent to see the game out.

Landon Oslanski scored Braehead’s fourth of the game on the rebound, after Cameron Burt had worked his work up the inside left, with his shot rebounding out for his team-mate.

Edinburgh pulled another back through Igor Valeyev with a backhand finish, but it wasn’t enough in the end as Clan booked their spot against the Flyers.
