Brilliant bog stompers are doing their bit for veterans Double the number of runners turn out

- Alison Rennie

Adventurous runners stomped their way across Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park to raise money for veterans.

The second Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park Bog Stomp attracted nearly double the number of runners that took part last year.

The 10k route took participants up the steep Dunrod Hill through bog and mud, with stunning views across the Inverclyde hills over the River Clyde to the Arrochar Alps and beyond.

The run began at the park’s Greenock Cut Visitor Centre and everyone who took part raised money for veterans’ charity, Erskine.

Fiona Carswell, development and marketing officer for Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, said: “Not everyone had superfast times, but it is the taking part that counts.

“Some folk took at least two hours to complete the course, some took time to get selfies, others completed as a team, while some were in fancy dress.

“Given all the smiles at the finish line, the event looks like it will certainly be running again in 2018.”

A total of 93 runners took part, compared to 51 in last year’s inaugural run.

First male across the line was Kieran Cooper, who completed the course in 42 minutes, 30 seconds.

He was soon followed over the line by his dad, Richard, in 45 minutes and 23 seconds – the same first and second finishers as last year.

First female across the line was Sue Hewitson, from the Greenock Glenpark Harriers, in an impressive time of 54 minutes and 54 seconds.

The most travelled runners on the day came from Hong Kong.

Given all the smiles at the finish line, the event will definitely be running in 2018 Fiona Carswell

To Szewing said: “We are on holiday in Scotland and were absolutely delighted to find this event on.

“We were so pleased to be able to experience the wonderful hills of Scotland in this way.

“Everyone was so welcoming, it really was a memorable day.”

All the money raised for Erskine is still being collected, with a final total expected soon.
