Velo men follow the sun

Cyclists swap rain-soaked Scotland for Mallorca and Los Angeles

- Craig Ritchie

Safe to say it was a weekend of two halves following some chaotic weather.

The Paisley club’s Saturday bunch were low in numbers this weekend as many riders opted to make the most of the good weather since the forecast for Sunday was dire to say the least.

But still the group cycled on and headed out on leisurely rides to Aberfoyle and Loch Katrine, Rothesay, and a bit more local with some riders choosing to ride a loop from Paisley to Lochwinnoch and Kilmacolm.

As forecast, Sunday’s weather was brutal, so for many riders it was a case of turning over and enjoying a rare lie-in.

But that was not the case for Doug Munro and Ciaran Kirkpatrick who were enjoying the warmer climate of Mallorca.

Kirkpatrick put in 110 miles in one day, which is some feat in the Balearic sunshine.

Munro has been enjoying slightly shorter and hillier rides around the island.

On the other side of the world, Colin Powley has been training in Los Angeles while on holiday there, taking on the iconic climb of San Francisquito Canyon, just north of LA.

Another great effort which will put Colin in good standing for taking part in the Track League at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome which starts next month.

Looking ahead, Paisley Velo have got the final of its Series B Time Trial Championship on Tuesday evening on the Georgetown Road.

A large number of riders are also heading up north at the end of the week for a training weekend up in the Torridon/Applecross area, taking on the iconic Bealach Na Ba climb.
