Curtain up as witches cast their spell again

Play features dark humour and inspirational songs

- Alison Rennie

27.09.2017 A play inspired by the Paisley Witch Trials is due to be staged at the Wynd Centre on Hallowe’en.

Combining community and professional performers, singers and musicians, Seraphina examines feminine power and has an all- female cast, crew, composer and choir.

The show opens on Tuesday, October 31, and features dark humour, inspirational song and spirited dance.

Written and produced by theatre company conFAB, the cast features Kim Smart, the Scots actress who is best known for her role as Madame Nesle de la Tourelle, in cult TV series, Outlander and ex- MSP Rosie Kane in the chorus.

The show has been funded by Renfrewshire’s Culture, Heritage and Events Fund as part of Paisley’s bid for UK City of Culture 2021.

Rachel Jury, artistic director of conFAB, said: “Seraphina comes to the stage at an interesting time for women: we have two female leaders of Scotland and England.

“With Seraphina, I wanted to look at feminine power and how, historically and up to the present day, patriarchy has exploited women causing the suffering of women, men and the Earth and how today it threatens our very survival.

“The story of this exploitation is told through the history of Witches and how they have been perceived through time.

“I am delighted that the play is supported through Renfrewshire’s Culture, Heritage and Events Fund as part of Paisley’s bid for UK City of Culture 2021 and look forward to the conversations I hope the production will inspire from those local, and those not so local, to Paisley.”

The show features full nudity, but no sexually explicit material, and runs from October 31 to Saturday, November 4, at the Wynd Centre in Paisley.

Tickets are priced £ 10 (£ 5) and are available from www. seraphina. brownpapertickets. com or phone 0345 130 5218.
