Bring on the Auld Enemy

Winger delighted with third Scottish call-up

- Craig Ritchie

Lewis Morgan insists it will be a massive honour to pull on a Scotland jersey to face the Auld Enemy.

The St Mirren winger was yesterday called up to the Scotland under-21s squad for the upcoming clashes with England and Latvia.

He is joined in the side by Saints teammate Liam Smith, on loan from Hearts, and former Buddie, Stevie Mallan.

The call- up, Morgan’s third, is recognition for his stunning display in the black and white stripes this season. The winger already has eight goals in all competitions this season, and is the side’s top goalscorer.

And now, he admits, he can’t wait to pit his wits against some of the top players south of the border.

Morgan told Express Sport: “It is always an honour to get called up at an international level, and I’m looking forward to it.

“These are two big games in the group. We were unlucky with the draw but these are the games you are looking forward to in all honesty.

“It will be a good experience regardless, but hopefully I can come back to St Mirren with some good results.

“I think the England game is the one that stands out to everyone. That will gather some more hype than the other ones.

“But even facing Holland the last time I was called up was absolutely fantastic. We can take confidence and the positives from that and take it into the England game and I think we can get something out it.”

Scotland will come up against Aidy Boothroyd’s English side later this month, with Morgan set to miss St Mirren’s Irn-Bru Cup clash with Raith Rovers as a result.

And having played a starring role in their last match with the Netherlands, where he was Man of the Match, Morgan insists that no one will be underestimating Scot Gemmill’s young Scottish side.

Morgan added: “I’m sure England will have a squad where most of their boys are playing first team football.

“But this Scotland squad is the same, even at different levels. On any night any side can beat another and we showed that against Holland last time.

“We were the underdogs the last time but I don’t think anyone will be underestimating us now.”

And now in line to gain his third cap at this level, Morgan revealed he feels right at home on the international stage.

He said: “When you first go into the squad you are trying to prove to everyone else why you are there.

“I feel now that I have settled in and everyone knows what I am capable of and what my strengths are.

“I just enjoy them more than anything else now – it’s a good wee break from club football but I’ll be keeping a close eye on the Irn-Bru Cup.”
