Sozzled teenager lashed out at paramedics and police

A booze- swilling lout sparked mayhem for both paramedics and police during an emergency call-out.

Nathan Stewart, 18, who was found lying on the road by an ambulance crew, turned so violent that medics summoned police for help.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard the boozed-up youngster then kicked off at cops, even assaulting one constable during the rammy, which took place at Main Road, Elderslie, on August 12.

The yob, who has already clocked up a string of public disorder offences, had been banged up in Polmont Young Offenders’ Institution until he appeared in the dock for sentencing yesterday.

Fiscal depute Hazel Emmerson said: “At around 10pm, police attended a report on the roadside from a passing paramedic.

“The paramedic requested police assistance to deal with a young male. At around 10.15pm police made their way to the locus.

“The accused had been removed from the roadway by ambulance staff and was now at the side of the road.

“He was heavily intoxicated, agitated and abusive, warning police, ‘Not to come f**king near me,’ and telling them to ‘f**k off’.”

The fiscal said a struggle ensued with officers where Stewart, from Greenend Avenue, Johnstone, shouted, swore and lashed out with his arms, at one point, striking an officer with his head.

Police officers had to handcuff him and secure him with fast straps before taking him into custody.

Stewart pleaded guilty to charges of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, and that he did so while out on bail.

He also admitted charges of resisting, obstructing and hindering police officers in the execution of their duty.

Defence agent Cha rl i e McCusker told how the youngster had been a victim of two assaults while in custody at Polmont and urged the court to place him on a curfew at his parents’ house.

He said: “He has not fared well in custody. He suffered two assaults. He was punched and suffered a punctured lip. He also had two fingers injured.

“He has pleaded guilty to the offences and his parents are supporting him, and they are willing to work with him in dealing with his issues. Alcohol lies at the root of his problems.”

Sheriff Seith Ireland agreed with the lawyer, saying: “The time on remand has not been pleasant for you, and it’s not meant to be pleasant, but you are not meant to be assaulted either.

“You have had a taste of custody and you are on the verge of going back there if you don’t follow the promises you have made to your parents and your lawyer.”

He placed Stewart on a home detention curfew and deferred sentence on other matters until December.
