Super support for charity hike
Families get walking for fundraiser
Families got on the move and helped raise money for charity at a fundraising event.
Howwood woman Mairi Leitch organised her third annual Move a Mile for Muscles at Castle Semple Loch for Muscular Dystrophy UK.
Mairi and her sons, Aaron, 10, and Marc, 12, both have limb girdle muscular dystrophy and Mairi is a keen fundraiser for the charity.
She invited along Mhairi Black, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South, to open the walk and lots of people came along to enjoy a children’s raffle, face painting, home baking, bottle stalls, craft displays and a barbecue.
Mairi, 34, said: “It was a busy day, very hectic but I was really pleased with the turnout.
“There were people there I have met through the charity and people I’d never met before which was great to raise some awareness.
“Before Aaron was diagnosed, I’d never heard of muscular dystrophy but the charity has been a big support and I’ve met some great folk through it.”
Fundraising cash is still coming in but so far the event has raised £1,600.
Mairi said: “Every penny raised goes towards research so everything helps.
“It was worth all the hard work although I’m shattered now.”
Mhairi Black MP said she was “grateful” to be asked to take part in the event.
She said: “The work that Muscular Dystrophy UK do is crucial, and when I was asked to take part in the event to support them I jumped at the chance.
“It is especially nice to take part given that it took place during Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week.
“Like many other rare diseases, Muscular Dystrophy can often be misunderstood and the work of organisations like Muscular Dystrophy is essential for the families and individuals who are affected.
“Ensuring that people do not face the challenges that come with muscle wasting conditions alone can prove to be life changing and I am glad to have the opportunity to give this event my support.”
