Striker Ross is aiming to secure place in starting lineup

St Mirren striker Ross Stewart insists he is out to catch the eye of boss Jack Ross as he seeks a starting spot.

Stewart, a summer signing from Albion Rovers, has been restricted to substitute appearances this campaign.

Having played a major role in setting up Dale Hilson’s winner against Brechin City on Saturday, the 21-year-old admits he just needs to get his head down to impress his gaffer.

He told Express Sport: “It has been frustrating being a sub, but when you are asked to go on and make an impact, that’s what you try to do.

“Thankfully, at the weekend I was able to do that. Overall I just want to help the team as much as I possibly can.

“It has been brilliant. This is my first season as a full-time player so getting used to it was the most important thing.

“I feel like I have settled in now and the gaffer putting a bit of faith in me is helping.

“He has been giving me more time every week and thankfully I have been able to repay him.

“I’m just thankful to the gaffer for bringing me here in the first place and giving me a platform to play on. Hopefully I can start to get a bit of confidence and show people what I am capable of doing.

“Every player wants to play every week but I appreciate how good a team this really is.

“To get in the team is going to be difficult but it is down to the gaffer who plays. We have a really strong squad here and he has a lot options.”

Stewart revealed that rubbing shoulders with the experienced members of the St Mirren squad is continuing to help develop his game.

The striker reckons that playing alongside the likes of John Sutton and Darryl Duffy in training can only aid his progress as he bids to get up to speed having made the switch to full-time football.

He added: “It has been a good couple of years for me having moved up from the juniors and then Albion Rovers.

“But it’s brilliant to have these guys in training.

“You learn from them all the time.

“The experienced players will tell you pointers all the time, trying to help with movement and finishing and I am learning all the time.

“They are great easy to talk to and they are happy to give you advice so that can only be a benefit to my game.”
