New season off to a flying start for netball aces

Hoop stars net victories as they get back to business

St Mirren Netball Club have been quick off the mark as they chase success this season, securing wins in the opening weeks.

All players continue to work hard on a Monday night, under the watchful eye of coach and former international player Fiona Moore McGrath, as they bid to develop and build partnerships ahead of weekly matches.

The club’s first team return to Division One action was a success, with a win against St Stephen’s 2.

A nervous start from both sides saw the scores locked at quarter time, however, some smart defensive link- up play between Bronwyn Powell, Sarah O’Connell and Leigh McPherson made the route to goal almost impossible in the second quarter for their opponents.

Nicole Bryce and Lauren Wright were able to capitalise and transition the ball quickly to shooters Caroline Rodger and Hannah Holmes, who converted to take the lead.

All players’ passion to win was clear across the court, with some feisty contests and excellent pressure to turnover the ball.

The second half saw Susie Reid take to the court and build upon a solid start. A calming presence on court, she used her quick hands to feed into shooters and ensure possession remained with St Mirren. Cool composure from Rodger in the last quarter ensured that St Mirren were eventual winners.

St Mirren’s second team took to the court for their third game of the season.

The Saints took control very early on and never looked back. They were drawing at the end of the first quarter and continued to push forward.

St Mirren continued to dominate and half-time saw the side up by two goals heading into the third quarter.

They would go on to win by a scoreline of 25-18, thanks to some first-class feeding into the circle by Katrina Kelly and Emma Butchart. The movement of Stephanie Still and Geraldine Smith also aided the cause, while interceptions from the likes of Emma High, Vikki Smith, Eilidh Murphy, Louise Cloney and Stephanie Barr were key in securing the win.

A spokesman for the club said: “Should you wish to contribute to St Mirren’s success, or simply want to get fit in a fun and friendly environment then come along and give it a go on Monday nights at Glennifer High School, 7.30pm to 9.30pm.”
