Race is on to bag top athletics gongs
Kilbarchan AAC athletes Callum Hawkins and Jemma Reekie have been shortlisted for coveted athletics awards.
The duo have made the cut for the Scottish Athletics Annual Awards, with Hawkins in the final five for the FPSG Athlete of the Year award, while Reekie has been shortlisted for the U20 Athlete of the Year gong.
Hawkins makes the shortlist following a fourth place finish at the World Championships in London this summer. He is joined by former Athlete of the Year Laura Muir, double world para champion Sammi Kinghorn, Eilish McColgan and national record breaker Chris O’Hare in the running for the award, which will be presented at a glitzy bash at the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow, on November 4.
Reekie has also caught the eye with a number of stunning performances on the domestic and international scene over 800m and 1,500m courses.
Rodger Harkins, scottishathletics’ performance director, said: “Our FPSG Athlete of the Year shortlists are chosen by an independent panel and I am one of those who sits on that and is involved in the process. And I can safely say it is becoming one of the toughest decisions we have to make each year.
“Let me congratulate each and every athlete, and their coach, who has made our final lists.
“I believe that’s a big achievement in itself and reflects on really hard work put in, not just over the past 12 months, but almost, without exception, over a number of years to reach a high level in our sport.
“Just looking down the names we did shortlist and, of course, both Callum Hawkins and Laura Muir were very close indeed to individual medals at the World Champs in the marathon and the 1,500m final.”
At the awards, Hawkins will be joined by his father Robert as he is shortlisted for performance coach of the year.
