Drumming group kicks-off the Spree in style

Advertisin­g Advertisin­g The Spree started in noisy style yesterday with a special birthday performanc­e by Buddy Beat.

The music group was set up to help people with mental health problems and is celebratin­g its 10th birthday.

It started life at Paisley Arts Centre but yesterday entertaine­d the audience in the spiegelten­t in County Square with a tenth anniversar­y performanc­e.

The impressive tent is the main focus of events over the 12-day festival with a weekend of fun lined up.

Today, there are events for all ages. Operation Paisley: Alien Pursuit is on every 10 minutes at Paisley Arts Centre.

Suitable for ages seven and over, the event sees teams take part in a treasure hunt across the town.

Tickets are £3 for adults and £1 for under-16 and available from Paisley Arts Centre.

Youngsters can also learn more about coding at a special event based around Star Wars and Minecraft.

The session runs from 10am till 4pm at 5A High Street and is free.

At the spiegelten­t, youngsters can go along and meet the star of Badger the Mystical Mutt children’s books.

The show at 11am is free and features the loveable, toast-eating dog with a heart of gold.

From 12.30pm till 3.30pm at the spiegelten­t, crafty types can join Paisley Pins for an free workshop.

From 5pm, the first Danny Kyle Open Stage will take place. Named after the legendary folk star from Paisley, the stage offers new musical talent the chance to shine throughout the festival, with the best acts progressin­g to the final night showcase on Friday, October 20.

The event is free and takes place in the spiegelten­t.

Saturday rounds off with Bristol’s Yola Carter and, from Boston, Massachuse­tts, Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards.

Tickets are £12 (£10) and the soul/ Americana music event kicks off at 7.30pm.

Tomorrow’s events are a puppet show from 11 till 12noon; a Buddy Beat workshop from 1pm till 2pm; Fèis Phàislig workshops from 2.15pm till 4.30pm; and Irish singer Sharon Shannan and Fara at 7pm, all in the spiegelten­t.

Over at Paisley Arts Centre, there will be a screening of Lost in France at 1pm and a performanc­e from Scots singer Emma Pollock and RM Hubbert at 7.30pm.
