AILEEN WANTS LADIES TO HAVE A BALL WITH CLUB
Ex-Scotland star launches walking netball group
An ex-Scotland netball star is bringing sports opportunities to older people by making the game more inclusive.
Aileen Kearns, 53, has launched Renfrewshire’s first ever walking netball club.
Paisley Walking Netball sessions are aimed at novice players, older people and those who have recently been injured.
The fundamental rules of the game remain the same. However, there is no running involved, allowing everyone to enjoy the sport regardless of their level of fitness.
The Paisley woman, who, at the top of her game, played the sport for her country, said she wanted to open up opportunities by making netball accessible to everyone.
She explained: “Most people have played netball at one point — at school or elsewhere.
“But as they have gotten older, they may think they’re not fit enough to re-visit it.
“This is a way back into it — allowing folk to take part in a sports that’s manageable, while maintaining a good level of fitness.”
And Aileen said it’s not just the older community who can benefit from walking netball.
“It’s aimed at older women, but I have had school-aged girls come along to classes and men are welcome to attend too — there are no barriers.
“It’s also a good opportunity if you have an injury and want to try and ease your way back into sport.
“As the winter months approach, it’s the perfect way to get out of the house, stay active and make new friends. There’s a real social aspect,”she said.
Aileen, who first started playing netball at Castlehead High School, in Paisley, aged 12, felt there was a gap in the market for walking sports in the Renfrewshire area.
And, after 30 years outof- touch with the game, she thought it was time she and other Buddies had the opportunity to get back in the court.
With help from Netball Scotland, she launched Paisley Walking Netball last month in Gleniffer High School.
Aileen, who is a full-time carer, added: “Walking sports have become so popular in recent years and I wanted Paisley to join in the fun.
“I’m hoping to grow the club. The goal is one day being able to create a local walking netball competitive league.”
Classes run on a Thursday from 7pm to 8pm.
No experience is required and sessions cost £3.
