Proud president hails success of rugby aces

-

Paisley Rugby Club president Gavin Newlands has thrown praise behind the side as they bid to go 10 in a row this afternoon.

Newlands has watched on with pride as the side have gone over a year unbeaten at The Anchor.

And, with the rugby boys enjoying unrivalled success, and St Mirren sitting proudly at the top of the football leagues, Newlands insists it is a fantastic time for the town and its sports teams.

The politician told Express Sport:“I am delighted by the unprecedented early success Paisley Rugby Club have achieved this season.

“To go on a nine game unbeaten run shows how much work has gone into training in pre-season.

“The success on the pitch is good news for the club off the pitch too, as we welcome great sponsors from both Paisley and further afield into our family.

“We really couldn’t do anything without our sponsors and we rely on them heavily to continue to grow Paisley Rugby Club as a local hub of sporting activity.

“As we have backed the Paisley 2021 City of Culture bid and, with our presence in the town and the wider community improving weekly, I can only see the success of Paisley Rugby

Club being a good thing for the town and the bid.

“With St Mirren also being successful so far this season, we have a real chance of bringing sporting success to Paisley come the end of the season.”

Paisley face their sternest test yet when they welcome league leaders Cumnock to town this afternoon.

And Newlands has called on Paisley to turn out in its numbers to support the rugby side, in a bid to cheer them on to victory.

He added:“We take on Cumnock today at what has become known as Fortress Anchor, in Paisley.

“We need you — the community of Renfrewshire — to come and support your team in what will be a great game and atmosphere.

“It’s free entry, so bring all the family for a great day out.”
