Let’s make it a great quarter

-

St Mirren manager Jack Ross hopes Saints cap off the stunning start to the season this afternoon.

It goes without saying the Saints gaffer is on the hunt for three points every time the team take to the pitch.

But, with his targets in mind, Ross is keen for his side to smash their first quarter target with a win over Dumbarton.

He said:“I’m pleased at the moment. What happens this afternoon will determine if it has been a good start, or a very good start.

“If we get a positive result, then it will have been a great first quarter for us.

“Hopefully, that will stand us in good stead for the remainder of the season. That is all it is at the end of the day — one quarter of a long and difficult season.

“But it has been positive and we have managed to achieve that with a number of good players missing at times as well, so, hopefully, over the second quarter we can continue to achieve the same kind of results.

“Though, I hope we will have a stronger squad at our disposal to do that.” Craig Ritchie

St Mirren midfielder Lewis Morgan has his sights set on the Scotland senior team having caught the eye in the under-21s.

Morgan has been in blistering form this season, culminating in yet more man of the match performances for the Scotland youth side.

Such was his recent performance against England, the 21- year- old came in for praise from England U- 21s manager Aidy Boothroyd, despite Scotland being on the end of the receiving end of a 3-1 defeat.

And Morgan revealed the international scene is where he wants to be as he looks to become a staple on the biggest stage for years to come.

He said: “We all have to be looking to step up to the senior squad in the future.

“There is a good squad of players there so, hopefully, this under-21s campaign goes well and we all just keep improving.

“It was good being away. It was longer than I had been away before, so I had to get used to that side of things.

“It was a good test against England and good to get a positive result against Latvia in the competition.

“I didn’t feel overwhelmed by England, but they do have good players playing at a good level, so it was always going to be a tough game for us.”

But Morgan insists he has bigger silverware in his sights after bagging the Ladbrokes Player of the Month award for September, which was presented to him yesterday.

But, as much as he is happy to receive personal plaudits, it is the Championship title that he would like to get to grips with before the end of the season.

St Mirren have enjoyed a great start to the season, which sees them sitting at the top of the table ahead of today’s clash with Dumbarton.

He said: “The right end of the table is where we are aspiring to be, and the turnaround from last season is there for all to see.

“It is a different kind of pressure than we experienced last season, but you thrive on being at the top of the league.”

The winger struck three times over the past month, including a match- winning double against Queen of the South. And, having already hit five goals this season, Morgan has got his sights set on reaching 20.

He added: “I was quite disappointed I didn’t get a goal against Brechin to put myself top goalscorer, but it is something I have always wanted to add to my game.

“I have certainly done that so far and, hopefully, the goals keep coming.

“I have said all along that I want 20 and I will try and get to get as close to that as I can.

“To be part of a team that is playing well always helps.

“I have been given that freedom this year to hit shots from distance, Stevie Mallan made the most it last year, so, as long as I’m hitting the back of the net, I’m happy.”
