MSPTom joins pension battle
A Renfrewshire politician has backed campaign group opposed to increasing the state pension page for women.
Tom Arthur, MSP for Renfrewshire South, met with Women Against State Pension Inequality ( WASPI) group members in Barhhead this weekend.
The event took place to offer support to women born in the 1950s who are no longer entitled to collect their state pension at the age of 60.
WASPI volunteers were on hand to offer advice and assistance to those impacted by the changes.
WASPI do not dispute the equalisation of the pension age, but does not agree with the way that the changes have been implemented.
The campaign encourage women to write to the DWP and lobby the UK Government for a fairer way to implement these changes.
Mr Arthur said: “These unfair changes affect women born in the 1950s, many of whom have paid their National Insurance contributions for decades with the expectation that they would be able to retire at 60.
“It is disgraceful that 2.6 million women across the country have been unfairly forced to reconsider their retirement plans at short notice.
“This issue affects thousands of women across Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire, including their families and I will continue to support the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign.”
