Weirdo hounded terrified ex-partner

- Chris Taylor

A creep bombarded a 27- year- old mum with threatening voicemails after she dumped him – and even targeted her parents.

Gary McLafferty, 31, hounded his ex, calling and sending her menacing texts after he was told to keep away.

He even began pestering her family and turning up at her home when they split.

The weirdo yesterday pleaded guilty to terrifying his former partner, who has not been named, during a month-long hate campaign at Paisley Sheriff Court.

He could now be slapped with a non-harassment order and may be jailed if he makes any further contact with the woman.

Sheriff Craig Harris ordered checks into his mental health and warned he could also be banned from leaving his house at night.

He said: “Due to the nature of the complaint, I will call for a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty assessment.”

The court heard McLafferty “engaged in a course of conduct which caused fear or alarm” during the summer.

Between May and June, he sent a barrage of voice and text messages to his victim – even though she made it clear she “did not wish contact”.

He even began turning up in her street and, when she still would not respond, called her mum and dad.

McClafferty’s frightening behaviour eventually forced her to call the police over fears for her safety.

He admitted that he did “repeatedly send text messages” which were abusive and “repeatedly leave voicemail messages”.

The former Park Mains High pupil made numerous threats and abusive remarks during an onslaught between May 5 and June 24.

Court papers revealed McLafferty can be heard bawling and swearing on answering machine recordings.

Defence lawyer Gordon Nicol made no attempt to explain his client’s actions.

McLafferty made the calls and sent threatening texts at an address in Bishopton.

He faces being put on a curfew and banned from leaving his home at night after admitting the frightening behaviour.

Sheriff Harris also insisted a non-harassment order could be put in place in the coming weeks.

McClafferty, of Porton Place, Bishopton, has been ordered to return for sentencing on November 13.
