Angry husband is warned to keep away from family home

A dad battered his wife because she ignored his demands to speak to a relative on the phone.

Ranjit Singh, 48, repeatedly punched Inderjit Kaur while their seven and eight-year-old children were in the house.

He even snatched the home phone from her when she tried to call for help.

Singh admitted assaulting her during the bust-up when he appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court.

Prosecutor Colin Wilson told how the brute lashed out after the woman did not rush to do what he had asked.

He said: “The accused was on the phone to a relation in India and wanted the children and Mrs Kaur to speak with them.

“Mrs Kaur was making dinner and the children were in their rooms and didn’t attend. “This angered the accused. “He then began to shout and became aggressive towards her.

“He struck her by punching her once on her left shoulder and once on her right shoulder.

“Mrs Kaur made attempts to call police using the landline, but the accused noticed and removed the phone from her, cancelling the call in the process.

“Due to being fearful of his actions, she used her mobile phone to contact police and was able to pass on her details.

“Both the children had come from their rooms and were fearful for their mum’s safety.

“The accused started to throw television remotes to the floor.

“Police arrived and noted Inderjit Kaur and the children appeared emotional and distressed.”

Singh was taken from the family home in Renfrew’s Paisley Road after the ordeal around 4.40pm on August 29.

But the bully told officers nothing had happened and claimed he “didn’t do anything”.

Mr Wilson urged the court to consider banning Singh from having any contact with his wife.

Defence lawyer Eamon Keane insisted his client hoped to rekindle the relationship.

He said: “His position is simply that a build up of tension in the matrimonial home came to a head over a trivial matter.

“He’s lost his temper and behaved in a wholly unacceptable manner.”

Sheriff Craig Harris bailed Singh and warned him to keep away from his wife and the family home.

He said: “I am going to call for some background reports to understand more about your personal circumstances.

“You will have to come back to court once that report is available for me to deal with this case.”

Singh, of High Street, Renfrew, has been ordered to return for sentencing on November 13.
