Animals were starved

- Ron Moore

A woman is facing jail after admitting horrific animal abuse charges involving her two dogs.

Danielle Brown, 31, wept in the dock as she pleaded guilty to causing pet dogs Shasta and Skylar unnecessary suffering by starving them and refusing to take them to the vet.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard Brown, of Dunlop Street, Linwood, admitted neglecting the animals between February and March this year.

Court papers revealed that Shasta was left emaciated and started to suffer from a string of health conditions, including sight problems and a skin complaint.

Brown admitted charges of failing to provide the animal with adequate or appropriate nutrition and of failing to

seek veterinary treatment, leaving the animal to suffer.

The other dog Skylar was also underfed, leaving it too to be become underweight, and it suffered dental problems.

Brown also pleaded guilty to charges of failing to provide adequate care or nutrition or seeking veterinary attention for the animal.

Yesterday, Brown was told she faces “the possibility of a custodial sentence” after she admitted the offences in contravention of the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act of 2006.

Defence agent Jonathan Manson confirmed his client was pleaded guilty to two charges of causing unnecessary suffering to the dogs.

However, he added as he was appearing on behalf of the accused’s principal agent Matthew Berlow, t the defence submission on behalf of the accused would be heard when she is sentenced at a later date.

Fiscal depute Pamela Flynn asked the court for immediate deprivation and disqualification orders keeping the pets from the accused and banning her from keeping any pets in future.

Sheriff Vincent Canavan told the accused: “You have pleaded guilty to charges of causing unnecessary suffering to the animals.

“You face the possibility of a custodial sentence given the nature of the charges. I shall continue the Crown’s motion for disqualification and deprivation and defer sentence on you while I call for reports.”

The accused who wept openly in court was told she will learn of her fate when she appears for sentence next month.
