Gong for Fiona’s fantastic art collection
Museum curator Fiona Greer has been recognised by the UK-wide Robert Logan Award 2017 for her work.
Fiona, from Elderslie, is curator of art at the Scottish Maritime Museum, which has collections in Irvine and Dumbarton.
She has been recognised specifically for her outstanding contribution to the development of the museum and improving the experience for visitors to the attraction.
Fiona received the award, which was presented at The British Association of Friends of Museums annual conference at The London Transport Museum, for her achievements in creating a nationally-significant art collection and for establishing the multi-award winning illumination : Harbour Festival of Light, in particular.
She was appointed as part of the strategic, three-year art acquisitions programme called SMMart: Enriching the Imagery of Scotland’s Maritime Heritage, which has been made possible by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Collecting Cultures programme.
Fiona said:“I’m delighted to have won this year’s Robert Logan Award.
“It’s a fantastic recognition of the efforts of everyone across the museum, as well as the support of our funders and partners.
“In particular, we are grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Collecting Cultures programme, which enabled us to begin the creation of our national art collection.”
The collection, which has also been made possible with the assistance of Art Fund and the National Fund for Acquisitions, already includes works by artists including Ian Hamilton Finlay, Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, George Wyllie, Tom McKendrick, Muirhead Bone, Benno Schotz and Patricia Cain.
The Robert Logan Award 2017, which is open to people under 30 years of age working in the heritage sector, also recognises those whose work has enabled a museum to attract a wider audience.
David Mann, director of the Scottish Maritime Museum, added: “We are thrilled to see the passion, creativity and expertise Fiona has brought to the museum in her role as curator of art recognised with this UK national award.
“Within two years, Fiona has created what is fast becoming a very exciting national art collection.”
